FOREST TRAIL CONSORTIUM ASSISTS

BOOKS ON TAPE NOW ON CD

Library patrons who enjoy listening to books on cassettes may now wish to try the new option, books on compact disc. The first two samples available are two novels: Ernest Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea, read by Frank Muller, and Barbara Kingsolver's The Bean Trees, read by C. J. Critt.

The CDS are available on loan through the Northeast Texas Library System (NETLS). If the response to the CDS is positive, more will be ordered from NETLS.

A quote from novelist P.D. James in her memoirs, Time to Be in Earnest:

"[A] novel can't be just a raw slice of personal experience, however tragic or engulfing. Obviously we must use our own lives as material - what else do we have? - but a novelist must be able to stand aside from this experience, view it with detachment, however pain- ful, and fashion it into a satisfying shape.

It is this ability to detach oneself from experience and, at the same time, portray it with honesty and controlled emotion, that makes a novelist."

EXCELLENT DISPLAYS

Have you noticed that eye-catching displays that regularly appear in the east wall cabinets of the Library entrance hall? Or the brightly decorated wall on the west side of the entrance hall? Or the enticing children's area?

If you have noticed these well-done displays, next time you're in the Library, please express your thanks to creative children's librarian Jo Jones.

  REMINDER

The Lunch 'N' Learn program on winterizing your garden will be held on Thursday, November 2, at noon.
