RESULTS OF NATIONAL LIBRARY WEEK OBSERVANCE
A review of the Library records showed that Bernard Mayfield is the man who has held and used a card with the Library for the longest period. It was determined that Ruth Haberle, a life member of Friends, is the woman who has held and used a card for the longest period. Both longevity record holders were pictured in the Daily Progress.
Also pictured in the Progress were Johni Winstead and daughters Taylor and Chasteyne. They, with father Rick and brother Shane, were singled out as the Library Family of the Year. Circulation records indicate the Winsteads check out some 30 to 40 books every two weeks.

A group photo of librarians in the city was featured in the Progress. The libraries represented included East Side Elementary, West Side Elementary, the Middle School, Lon Morris, Jacksonville College, the BMA Theological Seminary, and the Public Library.
Readers at the traditional readers' evening were Kay Keller, Peggy Lustig, Bernard Mayfield, Gordon Ross, Dirk Sheridan, Amanda Speck, John Speck, and Frances Whiteside. Wayne Ralston was master of ceremonies. Claudine Mellinger and Dona Ralston furnished refreshments on behalf of Friends.
Selections read included short stories, work of children's writers Dr. Seuss and Shel Silverstein, a column by the late Paul Crume, and memoirs.
Each member of Friends received by mail on or around April 18 an envelope containing a report on the results of the book sale and a survey on the direction Friends should take.
The survey listed activities that Friends has traditionally undertaken, such as a book sale and support of the Jacksonville Literacy Council. It suggested activities that have been successful for other Friends groups.
It also inquired about the interest of Friends in attending a meeting and the best time for the meeting to be held.
The survey was made anonymous in hopes that members would complete in without worrying that they will be asked to chair a project simply because they favor the project.
You are encouraged to complete the survey and return it by May 15, either by mail, by leaving it at the circulation desk, or by dropping it in the return book slot. The Friends board solicits the opinions and input of members concerning the directions in which the corporation's funds and volunteer time should be directed.
