MEET YOUR LIBRARY STAFF
A regular feature of Library Now! is a profile of the staff members. This month, meet Judy Nutt. She works 20 hours a week as part of the Senior Texans Employment Program (STEP).
STEP is funded by the state to help seniors make ends meet financially and to get them back in the workforce. They are employed by non-profit orga- nizations or by government agencies. A STEP worker must be 55 or older and cannot earn more than a certain amount of other income to be eligible to work in the program for 20 hours a week.
How long have you worked in the library?
Since August 1997
In what area do you usually work?
I help Barbara Crossman and Ann Clampitt.
What are you currently reading?
The 10-volume Foxfire series, edited by Eliot Wigginton. I'm currently on A Foxfire Christmas. The series was begun in the mid '60s by a college professor who had his students interview oldtimers about affairs of plain living so these things would not be lost when the oldtimers passed away. The reader learns about building a log cabin, making mountain crafts and foods, planting by the signs, snake lore, hunting tales, faith healing, and moonshining.
I'm also reading Daniel Boone by John Mack Faragher, a book that a friend gave me for Christmas because Boone is my 6th great-uncle.
What book do you recommend?
Poetry. I write my own. It is a beautiful form of expression.
What web site do you recommend?
I like state and federal government web sites that allow me to express myself to elected officials. For example, http://www.house.gov/turner puts me in touch with my Congressman to fuss or flatter.
What do you do in life beside work at the library?
My hobbies are keeping up my home and yard. I visit my mother's friends in nursing homes.
What do you find satisfying about work at the library?
It's quiet and not stressful.
What is your "dream wish" for the library?
To have more considerate users. The Library is a service to them that should not be abused.

MEET YOUR DIRECTORS
Randy Gorham recently began his term as a trustee.
What is your term on the board?
April 2000 to April 2002
By which councilman were you appointed?
Mayor Tommy Dement
What are you currently reading?
During tax season, the only books that I read are the Master Tax Guide and the Form 1040 instructions!
What book do you recommend?
In the past, I have enjoyed Robin Cook's books. These are usually medical mysteries.
What web site do you recommend?
One of my favorite web sites is the home page of the Texas A&M Singing Cadets. The URL is http://www.tamu.edu/singing_cadets. Both of my sons are students at A&M. My oldest, Rob, has been a member of the group for three years. Given my love of music, I think the Singing Cadets are great!
What do you do in life beside serve on the library board?
I am a CPA and have been in public accounting practice for some 15 years. My hobbies are working in the yard, playing golf on occasion, and playing "Bertha," my stand-up bass. Along with Roland Brown, Dr. Sam Smith, Lorin Lykins, Jerry Lykins, Sue Schultz, and Johnny Helm, I play in a local folk group called "Plain Folks."
Why do you serve on the library board?
I serve on the board to offer any help that I can to promote the Library.
What is your "dream wish" for the library?
That someday every person would be able to come in the library and read a book. I serve on the board of the Jacksonville Literacy Council. It has been an eye-opening experience to hear firsthand of the many adult people in our community who cannot read.
