  "PAGING DR. CARSON"

The literacy success story that Mary Marsh recommends begins on page 33 of the March 2001 issue of Reader's Digest.

Ben Carson, M.D., tells what started him on the road to his current position as chief of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. It happened in 1961 when his mother, Sonya Carson, cut off the television set that he and his brother watched constantly and announced to the startled boys, "We're going to the library."

Mrs. Carson assigned her sons a minimum number of books to read and report on to her, in writing. Only later did Dr. Carson realize his mother could not read what he and his brother wrote. Since then, Mrs. Carson has learned to read and earned her GED.

Dr. Carson relates the thrill of finishing his first book, Chip the Dam Builder, about (what else?) a busy beaver. He realized that he could form images in his own mind and not depend on TV to feed images to him. Since then, he and his brother, now an engineer, have not stopped reading, nor thanking their mom for cutting off the TV and insisting, "We're going to the library."
